Purpose and Focus
The Department of Sociology is committed to the enhancement of academic excellence through teaching and research. The faculty also encourages the relevant application of sociological theory and research methods to social problems and social issues.
Degree Objectives/Learning Outcomes
The sociology graduate should have knowledge of:
- The key concepts, debates, and trends in sociology.
- The major sociological paradigms and theories.
- The variety of methods used in sociological research. Sociology graduates will be able to:
- Show evidence of the development of a sociological imagination by applying sociological knowledge in their own projects — whether intellectual, personal, and/or political.
- Exhibit confidence in expressing ideas orally and in writing.

Admission and Retention Policies
Admission to, and retention in, the Sociology program as a major requires an overall grade point average at or above 2.50. A grade point average at or above 2.50 must be maintained through completion of the degree requirements. Sociology majors and minors must earn a grade of C (not C-) in every required major and minor course to remain in good standing (i.e., 101 or 102, 403, 404, 421, 422, and 101 or 102, 403, and 421, respectively). Fifty percent of the total required credits in the Sociology major and minor must be completed at UNLV.
Advisement
For academic advising, students should contact the College of Liberal Arts Wilson Advising Center. Students are also assigned a faculty advisor who is available to discuss student academic and career concerns.
