Certificate in Chinese Language

The Certificate in Chinese Language focuses on learning Chinese language skills and developing a strong foundation for the effective use of the language socially and professionally. This program should be of particular interest to students considering careers in education, government service, health care, hospitality, international business, journalism, media, or other professions where proficiency in a second language is important.

Learning Outcomes
The Certificate in Chinese Language will contribute to the attainment of the University Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (UULOs) and the Department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) Student Learning Outcomes in the areas of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.
Upon completing the certificate requirements, students will be able to:
- Listen and speak effectively in a variety of contexts, including informal conversations and formal business settings;
- Read authentic Chinese texts, such as common street signs, emails, social media posts, short stories, and newspaper articles that convey essential practical and social information;
- Understand the distinctions between Standard Spoken Chinese and Written Chinese, and apply this knowledge to write routine correspondence and short essays that convey basic information on practical and social topics in appropriate writing styles.

Required Courses
Complete 18 credits by taking the courses listed.
An overall 2.0 GPA or higher must be earned in these courses to be awarded the Undergraduate Certificate in Chinese Language.
