Social Science Studies (BA)

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Social Science Studies will understand how various social science disciplines structure and advance knowledge, raise and answer analytical questions, and deal with competing theories within specific fields. Emphasis is placed on developing critical awareness of the different methodologies applied to questions about society, social interaction, and human subjectivity. Students work closely with their advisers to plan a program that satisfies the required competencies in a chosen area of focus and in the social science disciplines. Students participate in a capstone during their final semester, demonstrating the incorporation of their chosen disciplines into a project, presentation, and paper. This program is available fully online as well as face-to-face.

Learning Outcomes
- Understand the value of interdisciplinary inquiry.
- Identify the theories, methods, and critical perspectives of at least two academic disciplines in the social sciences.
- Apply the theories, methods, and critical perspectives of at least two academic disciplines in the social sciences.
- Synthesize the theories, methods, and critical perspectives of at least two disciplines in the social sciences into a developed plan of research and analysis.
- Apply a synthesized plan of research to a single problem or set of problems concerning contemporary society.
- Communicate ideas clearly in written and oral form.
- Build an intellectual foundation to support continuous learning.

Modality: In-Person or Fully Online
This program is available Fully In-Person or Fully Online. A fully online student is one who has committed to pursue their entire degree, minor, certificate, or microcredential exclusively through online education. A fully in-person student is one who has committed to pursuing their entire degree, minor, certificate, or microcredential exclusively through in-person education.
Modality change process: Programs may be offered in more than one modality (instructional mode). If programs offer a fully online option, students may opt for a fully online offering at the time of admission. They will be tagged as a fully online student. A student desiring to change the modality from fully online to fully in-person or vice versa, should visit the appropriate advising centers.

Notes
- All courses in the Social Science major must be taken prior to IDS 495. Students can take summer courses and still walk in the May graduation as long as they do not take any IDS courses or any courses in the major. Students who wish to participate in the May graduation are limited to twelve summer credits.
- No courses counted towards the General Education core can be applied to the areas of study, except for the multicultural or international requirement.
- In order to successfully complete their degree, students must obtain a C or better in all IDS courses.
- Unless by special permission a maximum of six credits of Independent Study.
- A minimum of 42 upper-division hours are required for the completion of the degree.
- Students may complete a maximum of 21 credits from any one department.
- Students must complete a minimum of 6 credits in at least three different Social Science departments.
- A student may apply up to a maximum of four physical activity credits combined (PEX) as electives for graduation.
- IDS 494 is a Milestone Experience course for Social Science Studies B.A.
