Applied Health Sciences Major - Bachelor of Science (BS)

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Applied Health Sciences in the School of Integrated Health Sciences allows undergraduate students to customize an academic pathway toward 1) application to an accredited undergraduate or graduate healthcare program; and 2) entry-level careers in healthcare and wellness environments.

Please see the UNLV School of Integrated Health Sciences web page at www.unlv.edu/integratedhealth for information about department programs, faculty and facilities. Degree worksheets and 4/5 year plan for the major are available at www.unlv.edu/degree/bs-applied-health-sciences.

Advising

Advisors at the Health Sciences Advising Center and the Pre-Professional Advising Center will counsel students at different stages of their studies (first-year, second-year, juniors, and seniors), and help them to identify a degree completion path that matches the student’s skills and abilities. The B.S. in Applied Health Sciences will provide additional opportunities for students that may not have been apparent to them at the beginning of their academic career.

Career Opportunities

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2020), the employment outlook for all healthcare-related professions is expected to increase 14% by 2028 (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/home.htm).

Indeed, which claims to be “the #1 job site in the world with over 250 million unique visitors every month,” lists the following employment opportunities in healthcare:

Non-clinical include: health educator, biomedical equipment technician, and health services administrator

Clinical employment opportunities include: paramedic, anesthesia technician, nutritionist, and clinical dietitian.

Additional employment opportunities include medical and health services managers in hospitals, clinics, managed care organizations or public health agencies, and claims reviewer.

Because the B.S. in Applied Health Sciences is designed to provide a pathway to a degree for students with varying interests in health-related fields, the degree is not geared toward a single industry or type of career path. Completion of the B.S. in Applied Health Sciences is valuable because it provides a foundation to advance one’s education through graduate and professional programs, and possibly lead to a higher salary. Possible graduate programs that students can pursue after completing the degree include occupational therapy, physical therapist, medical and health services managers, and physician assistants. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2020), these four areas are included in the list of top ten fastest-growing occupations, projected for 2019-2029. Employment opportunities for health-related fields in Nevada for students with a B.S. in Applied Health Sciences substantiate a critical need for this degree program.
