Plan Description
The Master of Science in Athletic Training degree is designed for students interested in injury/illness prevention, wellness promotion/education, and treatment/rehabilitation of injuries or medical conditions related to physically active populations.
Students who complete the Master of Science in Athletic Training degree will graduate from an accredited program (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, CAATE). Upon graduation, students will be eligible to take the National Board of Certification examination to become a Certified Athletic Trainer.

The following requirements are considered for admission into the M.S. Athletic Training degree:
- All applicants must complete and submit the M.S. Athletic Training program application and review and follow the Graduate College Admission and Registration requirements as outlined in the Admissions section of the Graduate Catalog.
- Prior to entering the program, applicants must complete all prerequisite courses and hold a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from a regionally accredited institution. There is no preference given to any particular baccalaureate degree.
- Preference is given to applicants with a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and with a minimum average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for prerequisite courses.
- The following are required with your application to the program:
- Two professional letters of recommendation: one from a Certified Athletic Trainer or other healthcare professional is strongly recommended.
- A statement of intent that includes the applicant’s background and interests; a description of their relevant experiences and skills (if applicable); the applicant’s longer-term professional and academic goals; and a description of the topics and/or experiences the applicant would like to explore while enrolled in the program. A well-formed letter of interest should describe the topics and/or experiences the applicant would like to explore while enrolled in the program. (Statement should be 1 page in length).
- Signed Clinical Observations Verification form (a minimum of 50 hours). The form may be found here.
- An interview with program faculty. In-person interviews will be offered to qualified applicants. Virtual options will be available for out-of-state applicants.
Prerequisite Course Policies:
- Achieve a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or higher for the prerequisite courses.
- Earn a “C” letter grade or better for each prerequisite course.
- All classes must be taken at a regionally accredited or equivalent college or university.
