Dual Degree: Master of Business Administration & Master of Science in Engineering - Civil & Environmental Engineering


Plan Description


This dual degree, offered by the Lee Business School in collaboration with the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering, provides a unique opportunity for students interested in pursuing both an MBA and a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The Lee Business School MBA Program is tailored for individuals seeking global career prospects and leadership roles, acknowledging the rapidly changing business landscape driven by new communication technologies and organizational structures. The MBA program equip students with essential skills, knowledge, and tools to become visionary leaders in this dynamic environment. The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering provides students with a diverse array of degree options within Civil and Environmental Engineering, covering specialized areas such as Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, and Water Resources/Environmental engineering. The admission requirements for the dual degree are the same as those stated under the original programs linked below:

-Master of Science in Engineering - Civil and Environmental Engineering

Applications will be reviewed by representatives of both Lee Business School and CEEC department, in an independent process within each college.

Applicants must be admitted to both Lee Business School and CEEC department to qualify for the dual degree program for that term.

If denied by one program, the applicant will have the option of proceeding with a single degree program with departmental approval.

All domestic and international applicants must review and follow the Graduate College Admission and Registration Requirements. Students are accepted into a degree program as described in the Graduate Catalog.

Course Requirements


Total Credits Required for the Business Administration M.B.A.: 30


Electives – Credits: 9


Complete 9 credits of electives from any 700-level course offered by the Lee Business School.

Capstone Course – Credits: 3


Total Credits Required for the Master of Science in Engineering - Civil & Environmental Engineering: 30


Elective Courses - Credits: 30


Complete 30 credits of advisor approved electives, including at least 9 credits in one of the following concentrations.

(Optional) Graduate Internship Course - Credit: Maximum up to 1

Students that opt to engage in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) must take 1 credit of CEE 792. This course can be taken only once during their studies. However, the credit will not be counted towards the degree.

Degree Requirements


The MBA degree requires a minimum of 30 credits of approved course work.

For the MBA, all requirements listed above must be completed successfully as defined by the Lee Business School and the Graduate College.

All required courses are sequenced so students may acquire the tools and skill they need for success in the program.

For the MSE in Civil & Environmental Engineering:

  1. Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits of approved graduate-level courses, out of which a minimum of 3 courses must be from one of the five areas of speciality listed above.
  2. A Master’s Examination Committee composed of at least four members of the UNLV graduate faculty is to be formed for the student. At least three of the committee members must be from tenured or tenure-track faculty of the CEEC Department. The fourth faculty member, the Graduate College Representative, is recommended by advisor/advisee and appointed by the Graduate College. The chair of the committee must be a tenured or tenure-track CEEC faculty with the expertise similar to the student’s area of specialty. There can also be an additional member from a related area who has GFS status in the department or UNLV.
  3. Out of 30 credits MSE related course work, at least 50% of the courses (600 and 700 level) within the total coursework must be from the College of Engineering.
  4. Out of 30 credits MSE related course work, at least 50% of the courses within the total coursework must be 700 level.
  5. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.00. A course in which a grade of less than C was earned will not be considered for use toward the degree.
  6. Students must take and pass a culminating exam prepared by the student’s Master’s Examination Committee. Students can only take the exam within the last two semesters of graduation and after completing at least 21 credits of approved coursework.

Graduation Requirements


The student must successfully complete the MBA capstone course. Students cannot graduate from one portion of the dual degree until the requirements for both are met.

The student must pass the culiminating exam to be conducted for the MSE. 

Students must apply to graduate from both programs for the same semester.

Students may apply for graduation up to two semesters prior to completing their degree requirements. All required forms must be submitted to the graduate college via the Grad Rebel Gateway.
