Gender and Sexuality Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs

Gender and Sexuality Studies is a relatively new field of study that seeks to correct institutional neglect, denial and devaluation of the study of women and gender in higher education. For students, this means learning how assumptions and policies regarding gender, race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, physical ability, nationality and other social dimensions shape the material conditions of men’s and women’s lives all over the world. The curriculum is designed to focus students on the relationship between feminist theories and women’s activism throughout history. Gender and Sexuality Studies graduates are equipped to work in any field or profession where analysis and action are integrated.

Please see the UNLV College of Liberal Arts Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies web page at for information about department programs, faculty and facilities.  Degree worksheets are available at Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies | Academics | University of Nevada, Las Vegas (

Only courses approved in advance by the Director of Gender and Sexuality Studies or the Undergraduate Adviser may be used in fulfillment of requirements for the Gender and Sexuality Studies major and minor. Students should consult their advisers to plan their schedules early in their UNLV careers because most Gender and Sexuality Studies courses are offered only once annually. WMST 101 or WMST 113 is a prerequiste for WMST 301; WMST 301 is the prerequisite for WMST 302; and WMST 301 and WMST 302 are prerequisites for WMST 497. We recommend following this sequence for core minor requirements: WMST 101 or WMST 113, WMST 301, WMST 302, WMST 497. We recommend taking WMST 497 immediately after WMST 302.
