Total Credits: 50-57
One seminar can be replaced by an appropriate 700-level course from a department other than the student’s major. Students who participate in one of UNLV’s semester abroad programs or a National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) honors seminar may replace one honors seminar for each semester off campus. Students must complete a minimum of HON 400 H seminars, and replaced seminars do not count toward the 31-credit minimum.
Department Honors
Students in Department Honors take 400 H seminars and complete a six-credit honors thesis/project during their senior year (HON 498 H and
HON 499 H). Many of the seminars can be used to satisfy general education core requirements in social science, humanities, or fine arts. The
thesis/project may satisfy elective credits in the student’s department.
Multidisciplinary Studies Program
This program is designed for students participating in University Honors who have educational goals that cannot be met by the usual majors on campus. The Multidisciplinary Study Degree track of the Honors College consists of three distinct pieces: the Honors College core curriculum explained above, two 24-credit concentrations, and 12 additional credits of honors seminars.
The 24-credit concentrations must be in two distinct disciplines. At least nine credits in each discipline must be at the 300-level or higher. The disciplines are thematic concentrations and not necessarily 24 credits with a single prefix. The honors senior project HON 498–499 H may, if acceptable to the faculty mentor and the dean of the Honors College, count toward one of the discipline-related concentrations. This program requires at least 124 credits, with a minimum of 42 credits of 300-level or higher courses. No course can be used to satisfy more than one of the above three categories.
Students must have an overall UNLV GPA of at least 3.30 and an honors GPA of at least 3.00 to graduate with an honors Multidisciplinary Studies Degree. Students who do not meet the Honors College minimum GPAs will earn a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree without the honors designation provided that they meet the minimum GPA requirement stated for that degree. Only courses in which a student has earned a C or better can be used to satisfy honors requirements.
