Elementary Education (Grades K-8) Major - Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED)
The Department of Teaching & Learning is dedicated to preparing students to excel as elementary teachers. Students who complete this program will earn a bachelor’s degree and be licensed as a K-8 teacher by the State of Nevada. Students who already have a degree and want to become an elementary teacher need to take course work through the teacher licensure program.

Elementary Education (Grades K-8) Degree Requirements - Total: 120 Credits
Completion of all program requirements will lead to eligibility for the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. To qualify for the Bachelor of Arts in Education, students must also complete two courses in the same foreign language.
Student Teaching in Elementary Education Program:
Approval for a student teaching placement is contingent upon:
- Completion of all program of study course requirements except EDEL 482 and .
- Students who take and do not receive a grade of “B” or better will not be able to enroll in . If a student does meet the “B” standard, they will be allowed to retake the course only one time; if they do not meet the standard the second time, they will be unable to complete the program.
- Students who do not receive a grade of “B” or better in will not be able to move on to , their internship. If a student does not meet the standard of “B” or better the second time they take , they will not be eligible to complete the program.
Student teaching is a full-time, full-semester experience in an elementary classroom. It involves a mandatory, on-campus orientation; observation and supervised teaching during which the student gradually assumes classroom teaching responsibilities; regularly scheduled observations and evaluations by the classroom teacher who serves as a preservice mentor teacher and by the assigned university site facilitator; and weekly student teaching seminar sessions. Because student teaching is a full-time responsibility, outside employment during that time is strongly discouraged, and the student may enroll in no courses other than and EDEL 481 , , or without department approval.
