Advanced Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education


Plan Description


Individuals who already hold a master’s degree in nursing and meet the admission qualifications, may take courses leading to the Nursing Education Post-Masters Certificate. Admitted students take courses as a non-degree student and are awarded a certificate documenting completion of the required course work. The Nursing Education Post-Masters Certificate prepares individuals for teaching positions within a program of nursing or a nurse educator position in a clinical setting. Additional courses beyond the minimum courses needed for the certificate program may be required if the applicants earned M.S. in Nursing lack courses required by the UNLV School of Nursing.

Plan Admission Requirements


Application deadlines

Applications available on the UNLV Graduate College website.

Students must apply and submit all admission requirements via the ApplyYourself system available through the Graduate College. Items 4-9 below will need to be submitted electronically through your ApplyYourself application.

  1. BSN degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or GPA of 3.00 in the last two years of undergraduate nursing work. The undergraduate nursing course work must have been completed at a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or Commission on Collegiate Nursing education.
  2. Completion of undergraduate courses in research, physical assessment, and a course in introductory statistics. These courses must have been completed with a C or better.
  3. Completion of a graduate level statistics course with a grade of B or better within five years before matriculation into the MSN program. The School of Nursing recommends taking either EPY 721 or KIM 751 offered through UNLV.
  4. Submit official transcripts for all previous college and professional schools to the School of Nursing and Graduate College. (If unofficial transcripts are available to the student, please upload these to your Apply Yourself application).
  5. Statement of 300 words describing the students’ professional goals and reason for seeking graduate education.
  6. Two letters of recommendation from either instructors or employers that speak to the applicant’s potential to complete the graduate program.
  7. Current resume or vita, which demonstrates a minimum of one-year clinical experience as a RN. It is recommended that the most recent years of practice be in the area directly related to the student’s proposed pathway of study.
  8. Current valid RN license in state of residence.

If admitted, submit a photo of self and current evidence of the following to the School of Nursing:

  1. Health insurance
  2. Nurse practitioner student malpractice insurance
  3. Immunization record of vaccinations against Hepatitis B, Varicella, MMR, Tetanus Diphtheria or Tetanus Diphtheria Pertussis booster (TD/Tdap) and a 2 step TB screen
  4. CPR certification
  5. Health and physical clearance completed by a licensed healthcare provider.
  6. A drug screen and background check (completed after admission of the program).

Students are accepted into a degree program as described in the Graduate Catalog. The faculty and corresponding sub-disciplines and sub-plans within the described programs are subject to change at any time.

Plan Certificate Completion Requirements


The student must submit all required forms to the Graduate College and then apply for graduation in MyUNLV by the appropriate deadline.
