Purpose and Focus

The Division of Educational Outreach mission is to extend UNLV’s educational resources in support of and partnership with the community, state, region and beyond in an effort to serve learner needs and interests through innovative courses and comprehensive programs and services. Adult, senior and part-time students: military personnel: government employees: and learners who are unable to attend traditional campus-based credit courses and programs constitute the student populations served by the division. The division work with deans and faculty across campus to shape university outreach to government, business industry, and the general public by offering high-quality credit and noncredit program offerings.

Through Continuing Education and its Professional Development Center, some programs serve practicing professionals with a comprehensive series of courses leading to certificates, as well as continuing-education courses, seminars, and workshops to maintain up-to-date skills and certification currency. Others serve the wider community with general interest; recreational; fitness and leisure courses; and activities for youth, adults, and seniors.

Additionally, the division provides administrative oversight and support for Summer Term, the Office of Distance Education, and Community2Campus, which develop academic credit programs serving special or emerging academic disciplines and special publics. Currently, the division also provides support for the Cannon Survey Center, Institute for Security Studies, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and Public Lands Institute.

Academic Programs Administered by the College

Summer Term

Summer Term is an integral part of learning at UNLV, spanning 13 weeks, starting with a three-week session and followed by two five-week sessions. Summer courses have the same academic content as the fall or spring courses, but move at a much faster pace. Many students enjoy limiting their attention to one or two topics and find that attending classes five days a week encourages them to concentrate on the subject material. For more information, visit summerterm.unlv.edu or call the Summer Term office at 702-895-3711.

Distance Education

Distance Education provides learning opportunities that are less restricted by time and place than UNLV courses scheduled on campus. Students may work toward a college degree, enhance their professional standing, or enrich their understanding of the world. All DE courses are taught over the Internet with interactive materials and streaming video. UNLV faculty, supported by instructional designers, programmers, and technicians, create engaging learning experiences in which students may interact any time their lives allow. For more information, visit distance ed.unlv.edu or call 702-895-0334.

Community2Campus:

The Community2Campus works to enhance campus and community collaborations primarily for non-traditional students and specific populations, businesses, and affiliations. It is another avenue to bring non-traditional students back to UNLV to complete their degree or advance their education. The Credit Courses are also very closely coordinated with the academic units on main campus and are typically taught at non-traditional times, in locations off campus, in a specific distance education arrangement, or for a targeted group. Community2Campus also serves the student veteran, military and family members and works in partnership with the U.S. Air Force through its Nellis and Creech bases to assist members of the military community in reaching their educational and professional goals. For more information, visit edoutreach.unlv.edu/community2campus or call 702-774-4626.

Admission Policies

The requirements for admission to the Academic Credit Certificate programs are the same as the requirements for admission to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Additional requirements may be added to gain admission to a specific program.

Non-credit and Professional Certificate Programs

The Professional Development Center offers non-credit certificates in many areas including human resource management, public relations, paralegal, customer service, systems engineering, waste water education training, child care, non-profit management, payroll administration, medical office procedures, and other areas. Call the Professional Development Center at 702-895-3394 for more information.
