Purpose and Focus
The Department of Educational Leadership houses undergraduate programs in Workforce Education and Development. The Workforce Education and Development program provides students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills that are necessary for developing and delivering instructional programs in secondary career and technical education programs and postsecondary/adult educational environments. Professional preparation in Workforce Education and Development programs focus on instructional and curricular decision-making processes required of contemporary educators in workforce education settings and business and industry. In addition, the department also offers a limited number of undergraduate courses in Educational Administration as well as the Nevada School Law class for pre-service teachers.

Areas of Concentration in Workforce Education and Development
The Workforce Education and Development major offered by the Department of Educational Leadership is designed to meet the educational needs of students desiring teaching careers in workforce education environments in either secondary or postsecondary/adult settings.
The Workforce Education and Development major provides three concentrations of study:
Concentration 1: Secondary Workforce Education and Development
The Secondary Workforce Education and Development concentration is a teacher licensure program designed to prepare teachers for high school and middle school career and technical education programs within the state of Nevada. (See listing of teaching fields.)
Concentration II: Postsecondary Workforce Education and Development
The Postsecondary Workforce Education program is designed to prepare students as community college instructors, adult career and technical educators, and business and industry trainers as well as for other adult-related instructional programs.
Concentration III: Business and Industry
The Business and Industry Concentration provides an avenue for those already teaching in a secondary career and technical program in Nevada to complete their undergraduate degrees without student teaching, but with a teacher induction course (Tools for Success) during their first year as a teacher.
Certification and Licensure Program
All students enrolled in the Workforce Education and Development program must declare and meet the requirements of an approved teaching field. Listed below is a representative sampling of the teaching fields that have been identified by the Workforce Education and Development faculty and the Nevada Department of Education. Generally, a minimum of 36 credit hours is required in a teaching field. Specific course work requirements for each teaching field are available from the Workforce Education and Development faculty or the Nevada Department of Education/Teacher Licensure office (http://nvteachers.doe.nv.gov/).
Students majoring in Workforce Education and Development (except Industrial Arts/Introduction to Technology, Home Economics) are required to provide evidence of three to five years of work experience in a business/industry related to their teaching field. Students may be granted up to 30 hours for past work experience in lieu of subject-area course work.
Special Programs
Business and Industry Teaching Endorsement
Students who desire a special teaching license in career and technical education may take the 12 hours of credit in professional career and technical education courses required by the Nevada State Department of Education. Please see a Workforce Education and Development faculty member for details.
Admission to the Major
Admission to the major requires a 2.75 GPA, successful completion of EDCT 230, and passing PPST scores (for workforce secondary).
Workforce Education Policies:
- Workforce Education and Development majors must select, from the fields available, a major teaching field.
- Any substitution of course(s) taken at another institution for a UNLV professional education course(s) requirement must be approved on a substitution form available in the College of Education Advising Center (CEB 226).
- All workforce secondary education students must attain passing scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) before they will be allowed to apply for student teaching.
- Application for student teaching (workforce secondary) or a teaching internship (postsecondary) must be filed the semester preceding the student teaching/internship semester. Approval for a student teaching/internship placement is contingent upon:
- Admission to the Workforce Education and Development program.
- Completion of at least 93 credits toward a bachelor’s degree in workforce education and development with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Completion of all professional education course requirements, with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Completion of at least three-fourths of the course work required in the student’s teaching field(s), with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Completion of 15 credits at UNLV, nine hours of which must be in professional education courses.
- Filing a completed student teaching or internship application by the announced deadline.
- Recommendation of the department.
GPA Requirement:
After admission to the program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. Students who fail to make satisfactory academic progress or are in noncompliance with department or concentration policies will be placed on either academic probation or suspension in accordance with the College of Education policy.
