Purpose and Focus

The Department of Art offers its students an education in the visual arts as an integral part of a comprehensive educational experience. Our degree programs offer intense, professional education in the aesthetics and theories of the visual arts. Students will be trained in the skills and intellectual awareness that are the basis for a future of creative and professional achievement in the visual arts.

Areas of Concentrations

Art History

Offers the student a program of study of cultural heritage in the visual arts. Prepares a student for a career or graduate studies in art history and related areas.

Ceramics

Focuses on skill development and the exploration of clay as a contemporary sculptural element.

Graphic Design

Offers the student a program of study in both mainstream graphic design and in new media utilizing current graphic technologies.

Painting/Drawing

Offers the student training in the principles, methods, and materials of painting and drawing within the context of subject matter.

Photography

Offers the student a comparative study of the skills and theories in contemporary art photography.

Printmaking

Offers the student the multiple-process techniques and theories necessary for the creation of fine art print images.

Sculpture

Offers the student the techniques and issues needed for the development of three-dimensional visual images.

Admission to the Major

Minimum GPA: 2.30

Admission Policies

All declared art majors must satisfactorily complete the following core program of introductory-level courses before declaring an area of concentration within the program or declaring the intent to pursue a B.F.A. degree: ART 101, ART 107, ART 108, ART 156, ART 260, ART 261, ART 266.

Upon completion of the core program courses, the student will declare his or her intention of pursuing the B.F.A. degree program. The student must have a 3.00 GPA in all departmental courses and maintain a 3.00 GPA in all departmental courses if accepted into the program. After completion of 59 to 74 credits, a portfolio review by the full department faculty is required for acceptance into the B.F.A. program. The student must then select a three-member, full-time faculty committee to guide and evaluate progress through the program.

Students who do not meet the minimum GPA may be admissible on a probationary status. Contact the department office.

Department Policies

Academic Policies

Studio courses may not be audited. Advancement to upper-division courses is dependent on acceptable performance, as determined by the instructor, in lower-division courses.

Courses must be taken in sequential numerical order in each discipline, starting with lower-division, intermediate, then advanced level-courses.

Transfer Policies

Students wishing to transfer credits toward a B.A. or B.F.A. degree in art must schedule a meeting with the department chairperson to determine which courses are transferable.

Advisement

Students, upon admission to the Department of Art, will be assigned a faculty advisor to guide and assist them in their progress toward degree fulfillment. These advisors will assist the student until all graduation and degree requirements have been fulfilled. Each student is expected to discuss course selection with the academic advisor prior to each semester’s registration to avoid any delays of the anticipated date of graduation.
