Welcome Letters from President and Provost

Welcome to UNLV!

You’ve chosen to pursue graduate study at a time of enormous complexity, when social, political, economic, and intellectual landscapes are shifting in real time.

Across every area of study, longstanding assumptions are being reexamined, new technologies are reshaping how we acquire knowledge, and academic fields are being challenged to address urgent real-world issues. These forces are not abstract. They shape the questions you are asking and the contributions you will make through your research and creative work.

In choosing graduate education, you are preparing to engage with the complexity around us. You’re developing the depth of understanding needed to contribute meaningfully in a world that benefits from informed and thoughtful scholarship.

At UNLV, you’ll find faculty who are not only experts in their fields but who take seriously their role as mentors and collaborators. You will also find peers who bring a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences, and who are committed to the goals of discovery and growth. Our graduate community is highly engaged and driven by a shared sense of purpose.

Graduate students are essential to the life of this university. You are instructors, researchers, creators, and partners. You drive innovation in your fields and elevate the academic profile of UNLV through your scholarship.

We are proud to support your work and your progress. Thank you for choosing UNLV for this part of your journey. I am confident you will find it engaging, purposeful, and worthy of your time and talent. I wish you much success!

Go Rebels!

Chris Heavey, Ph.D.

Interim President
Professor of Psychology

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to UNLV and the Graduate College. We’re so happy that you’re part of our Grad Rebel community!!

Having had the privilege of serving as the past dean of the Graduate College, I’ve seen firsthand how our graduate students make a real difference by engaging in forward-looking research, scholarship, and creative activities, teaching and mentoring undergraduate students and peers, and giving back to our community in meaningful ways. Graduate school is a time to ask big questions, engage with big issues, and make big leaps forward in your studies. You enter as a student and leave as an expert and colleague. Now is the time to gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials that will help to transform your life, propel your career, and help you build a brighter future for yourself and the world around you.

I’m proud to say that you’re studying in a dynamic, exciting, and thriving scholarly community at UNLV. We’re grateful to invite your contributions to the rich tapestry of ideas that make our university a vibrant and special place. You are vital in shaping the future of your discipline, your community, and UNLV.

As graduate students, you will enjoy the support of outstanding faculty in your academic department, school, and college. They will inspire you, support you, and challenge you to work hard and live up to your full potential. You also have the resources of the Graduate College behind you, helping you successfully progress from admission to graduation. We’re committed to providing an innovative learning environment defined by excellence, mentorship, and support.

But make no mistake, the journey ahead is ambitious and it will at times be challenging. It’s important to normalize struggle because no one does what you’re doing without moments of self-doubt and hurdles to face. Please remember two things in those moments. First, you belong here and we believe in you – we admitted you because you have the fundamental skills and aptitude to succeed. Second, we’re here to help lift you up and support you with resources and caring people all over campus. You’ve got this, and we’ve got you.

We are proud to support your success and are committed to ensuring that your time at UNLV is filled with purpose, growth, big ideas, great friends, and academic and professional accomplishments. Welcome to the next chapter of your academic journey this year. I look forward to seeing you on campus and watching all that you achieve.

Go Grad Rebels!
