Graduate College Professional Development Academy

This virtual success center is designed to help build and assist Grad Rebels. The Center offers Academic Support Certificates, Workshop & Training Sessions, Professional Development, Skills Support & Non-Academic Advising, and Graduate Career Services.

Division of Research and Economic Development  

The mission of the Division of Research and Economic Development is to support and promote a culture of excellence and integrity in research, scholarship, and creative activity and to advance economic development that benefits the university, community, and state. The division supports UNLV research and economic development by 1) serving the needs of UNLV faculty, staff, and students as they pursue research, scholarly, and creative activities; 2) developing opportunities, policies, funding, and infrastructure that support the performance of the highest quality research, scholarship, and creative activity; 3) promoting the university as a leader in statewide and regional economic development; 4) supporting the integration of research, scholarship, and creative activity into the educational experiences of students; 5) supporting the design, conduct, and funding of research projects that comply with local, state, and federal guidelines; 6) communicating the value of university research, scholarship, and creative activity to all constituencies; and 7) promoting progress toward attainment of the goals for research, scholarly, and creative activities identified in the university’s Top Tier strategic planning process.

Units reporting to the Division of Research and Economic Development include the offices of Economic Development (including the Small Business Development Center), Research Infrastructure, Research Integrity, Sponsored Programs Undergraduate Research, and the National Supercomputing Institute, the Nevada Institute for Personalized Medicine, and the UNLV International Gaming Institute.

Libraries and Service Agencies  

The university is home to approximately 50 research, public service, and archival units that serve a broad clientele. These centers and institutes report through the academic colleges and schools. UNLV Libraries UNLV Libraries is committed to encouraging students and creating quality programs that elevate growth and learning. It does so by participating in the articulation and assessment of student learning; providing direct instruction to students; partnering with classroom faculty on course and assignment design; and intentionally creating co-curricular learning experiences. As the only research library in Southern Nevada, UNLV Libraries has a strong community mission. The Lied Library and its four branches (Architecture Studies Library, Health Sciences Library, Teacher Development & Resources Library, and Music Library) offer more than 1.7 million books, including more than 500,000 e-books, as well as almost 20,000 electronic journals containing millions of articles. UNLV Libraries is also home to two renowned research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. In addition, Special Collections and Archives actively documents and preserves the history and history-in-the-making of Southern Nevada.


Division of Educational Outreach The division serves Southern Nevada with a wide range of classes offered year-round to those who wish to continue their education, add professional skills, or simply enrich their lives. Noncredit programs include classes, workshops, seminars, field trips, and extended travel-study programs. Certificate programs are offered in a variety of business and management areas. Some courses are approved for professional growth in-service credit by the Clark County School District. Other designated noncredit programs offer continuing education units (CEUs) for successful completion.
Office of Information Technology. OIT is responsible for supporting the academic, research, and administrative aims of the campus through the secure and effective use of technology. Dedicated to providing access to technology for all UNLV students, faculty, and staff, the office strives to create university awareness of technology as a fundamental component of the academic enterprise. OIT supports computer labs, computing devices, instructional technology, campus-wide administrative systems, and network infrastructure. Summer Term. Summer Term provides a variety of opportunities for students who wish to begin or continue university study. No formal admission to the university is required for summer term study, and no out-of-state tuition is charged to nonresidents. UNLV’s Summer Term offers many of the courses included in the general university curriculum as well as short workshops and seminars.


English Language Center. The center provides access to higher education at UNLV for immigrant, international, and other students learning English who need language, culture, and academic skills to succeed. The center helps students make a smooth transition from English as a second language courses to their academic studies. In addition to a full schedule of credit classes, convenient schedules, and an advising program, the ELC offers students an opportunity to experience the language, culture, and people of the United States.


Writing Center. The center offers free help to currently enrolled UNLV students and to UNLV staff with any writing project, from papers to creative writing to resumes, and at any stage of the writing process. The center’s consultants help clients brainstorm, make an outline, work on drafts, or simply serve as a soundboard for ideas. Services are available in person by appointment or via online submission or Skype. The center also has a computer lab for students to work on your drafts, do research, or work with a consultant.


Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. The museum provides exhibitions, lectures, and programming that engage visitors’ aesthetic and intellectual sensibilities. The museum is the temporary home of the Las Vegas Art Museum collection, which is featured regularly in the exhibition hall. Additionally, the museum maintains a superb collection of pre-Columbian and ethnographic art. Special arrangements can be made for school groups and tours.


National Supercomputing Institute. Established in 1990, the institute is a full-service supercomputing facility with on-site and off-site user training, national network accessibility, and a mission for excellence in education and research in supercomputing and its applications. The NSI provides supercomputer training and services to academic and research institutions, government and private industry for research and development related to energy, the environment, medical informatics, and health care delivery.
 

Integrated Graphics Services. This administrative unit is responsible for coordinating and printing a wide variety of university publications and maintaining university graphic standards in print. IGS provides offset printing, black and white and color copying, and an assortment of bindery services. It also operates Rebel Copy and Send, a one-stop retail shop providing printing and shipping services to students, alumni, faculty, and staff. The shop specializes in copying theses and dissertations to Graduate College specifications.


UNLV/CSUN Preschool. The preschool is a division of the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education and is housed in the Lynn Bennett Early Childhood Education Center on the UNLV Maryland Parkway campus. The mission of the UNLV/CSUN preschool is to provide a model inclusive early childhood program that serves children (6 weeks to 5 years of age) of students, faculty, staff, and general public; teacher training for future educators; and to promote research studies on issues and practices relevant to child development and early learning.


Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory-Las Vegas. UNLV is home to one of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s major research centers. The laboratory serves as headquarters for a wide variety of programs aimed at documenting natural and man-made environmental conditions. Through a cooperative agreement, UNLV students and faculty collaborate with laboratory staff on research projects and in instructional activities/staff, and general public; teacher training for future educators; and to promote research studies on issues and practices relevant to child development and early learning.


Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Since 1993, UNLV students and faculty have benefited from its membership in Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), a consortium of colleges and universities and a management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. ORAU works with its member institutions to help their students and faculty gain access to federal research facilities throughout the country; to keep its members informed about opportunities for fellowship, scholarship, and research appointments; and to organize research alliances among its members


Nevada System of Higher Education Computing Services. One of the facilities of the Nevada System of Higher Education statewide computing network is located on the UNLV campus. The facility is responsible for providing equipment and consulting services that support the growth of educational, research, administrative, and public service computing at all NSHE higher education institutions.


University of Nevada Press. The University of Nevada Press is a publisher of scholarly books. Established by the Board of Regents in 1961 and reporting through the University of Nevada-Reno, the press is making a contribution to the state of Nevada and to the scholarly community by publishing books in the areas of history, government, natural resources, ethnic groups, and contemporary affairs.

Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). WICHE aids residents in obtaining graduate and professional level education in fields of study not available within the state. Currently, Nevada is active in the WICHE Professional Student Exchange Program, the Western Regional Graduate Program, and the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program.
